Maternity Massage. The best gift we can give.
Pregnancy is the one miraculous time in a woman's life where the body will change almost daily. With constant adaptations in size, shape, hormones, hair, skin, you name it the body is changing and adjusting to create a new life.
Now we've said that out loud, it seems standard procedure that a woman should be supported during this time, targeting multiple levels such as physical body, emotions and mental health, pain, and relaxation. Luckily, we know just the treatment that can target all of these things… a good professional massage.
If you haven't been having regular massage before becoming pregnant it isn't too late to start, and do not be afraid, it is also the perfect time to start. Massage is not harmful for you or your baby at any stage of pregnancy. If you feel more comfortable starting a new treatment after your first 12 week scan then that is absolutely fine, equally if you want to start earlier and feel comfortable doing so with the right therapist then that is also perfectly fine. The main point is that you should feel positive and comfortable whenever you choose to start treatment.
Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing how your body will react to pregnancy and everyone is different, making it difficult to prepare for. However, ideally we will work with you on a regular basis weekly, fortnightly or monthly, to treat and prevent uncomfortable symptoms and tension due to your body's adaptations, or simply to offer you a moment's relaxation and connection to your new body and baby.
What to expect in your session.
We will first discuss with you any aches, pains and symptoms you are experiencing since the start of your pregnancy and any previous injuries or pain. This will include any previous births or pregnancies and postnatal issues.
For us, a woman who has given birth will always be postnatal, it is important to recognise that even if years have passed your body will have changed, adapted and become a new body. Many won't have had the time or chance to connect with your new body and so it is usual to experience new pains and discomforts such as back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain, pelvic floor issues and more. We can help at any stage of postnatal and recognise your previous journeys.
We will make you feel comfortable adjusting your posture from lying on your front, a position we won't do, to lying on your side and/or semi-supine, (on your back, upright, legs straight.) We use cushions and pillows for extra support, and sheets and towels for comfort and achieving the right temperature. You will feel relaxed, comfortable and supported.
For the massage, we will begin over the towels to help feel the tension and stretch the tissue around your hips and glutes. This helps to alleviate the discomfort caused by the growing bump and elasticity and postural changes in the soft tissue. We will also locate tight areas to work on through the body.
The pressure we can apply can be as deep as you like so you receive the relieving treatment you desire, however we will let you know which areas require a lighter pressure, and work with you to find the right balance. We often finish with a nice relaxing head massage.
The oil we use is coconut oil, which is great for the skin and completely safe to use in pregnant women.
Finally, we will finish the session with some advice on exercise and movement best suited for your symptoms and stage of pregnancy, to help keep your body as active and pain free as possible.
Our Recommendations
We recommend a session at least monthly throughout the pregnancy so we can manage the adaptations and changes, then as often as you need once you enter the third trimester as you may find sessions more often help with increasing discomfort.
Sign up to a membership of 6 or 10 sessions to receive a discount per session and benefit from regular sessions.
A word form Emily, one of our experts in maternity massage;
My prenatal clients always feel relief in their shoulders, back and hips. The side lying position really allows me to work around the hip joint, glutes and thighs which can carry a lot of stress and discomfort during pregnancy, as well as allowing my pregnant clients to fully relax with the help of bolsters and pillows. Pregnancy massages are both relaxing and effective!
Some clients have commented that the regular massages they received during pregnancy helped their body relax and prepare for birth, compared to previous pregnancies where they didn't receive pregnancy massage.
One of our returning client, Emma’s testimonial:
Laura’s pregnancy massages have really helped me during my pregnancy. I have suffered from hip pain and back ache and I always feel so much looser and relaxed after seeing her. I felt like my baby and I were in really safe hands with Laura as she made sure I was comfortable and warm throughout and made all the necessary adjustments needed during pregnancy massage. I’d highly recommend it, even if it’s only for some calming ‘me time’!
